Mopa or Dabolim: Which Goa Airport Is Closer to Your Hotel?

Mopa or Dabolim: Which Goa Airport Is Closer to Your Hotel?

Short answer: choosing Mopa or Dabolim comes down to where you are staying. If you are staying in North Goa (Arambol, Morjim, Anjuna, Vagator, Calangute, Baga or Candolim), Mopa Airport (GOX) is usually closer. If you are staying in Panjim, Vasco, Margao, Colva, Benaulim, Cavelossim or Palolem, Dabolim Airport (GOI) is usually closer. The difference can be more than an hour of driving each way, so it is worth checking before you book flights.

Goa has two airports at opposite ends of the state

Manohar International Airport, Mopa (GOX) is in Pernem taluka, in the far north of Goa, close to the Maharashtra border. Dabolim Airport (GOI) is near Vasco da Gama, in the south-central part of the state. Goa is long and narrow, so the airport you land at decides how long your first and last drives of the trip will be.

Your ticket shows the airport code. If it says GOX you are landing at Mopa; if it says GOI you are landing at Dabolim. Many booking sites simply say “Goa”, so check the code, not just the city name.

Drive times from each airport

These are the approximate taxi times our drivers work with. They change with traffic, time of day and season, so allow extra time for a flight.

Where you are staying From Mopa (GOX) From Dabolim (GOI) Closer airport
Arambol, Morjim, Mandrem about 30–35 min about 1 hr 45 min Mopa
Mapusa about 35 min longer Mopa
Anjuna, Vagator about 45 min longer Mopa
Calangute, Baga, Candolim about 1 hr about 1 hr 10 min Either
Panjim about 50–60 min about 40–50 min Either, Dabolim slightly
Colva, Benaulim, Margao about 1 hr 45 min about 40 min Dabolim
Cavelossim, Mobor longer about 55 min Dabolim
Palolem, Agonda about 2 hr 45 min about 1 hr 40 min Dabolim

Staying in Calangute, Baga or Candolim? Either airport works

The beach belt between Candolim and Baga sits roughly in the middle, about an hour from Mopa and a little more from Dabolim. Here it makes sense to choose by flight time and price rather than distance. One practical point: the drive from Dabolim to the beach belt passes the Panjim area, which can be slow at peak hours, so allow a little extra time for evening arrivals.

Staying in Panjim?

Panjim is close to the middle of the state. Dabolim is usually a little closer, about 28 km and 40 to 50 minutes, while Mopa is around 50 to 60 minutes. If one airport has a much better flight time, it is usually worth taking it.

Flying in and out of different airports

Some travellers land at one airport and fly out of the other, for example arriving at Mopa for a North Goa stay and leaving from Dabolim after a few days in South Goa. That works well if your itinerary moves south. Just remember that the two airports are at opposite ends of Goa: if you need a transfer between them on the same day, leave plenty of time.

Before you book your flights: four things to check

  • Where you sleep on the first night. Choose the airport closest to your first hotel, not the one closest to the place you will spend most time. A long drive after a late landing is the part travellers remember least fondly.
  • Arrival time. A flight that lands late in the evening at the “far” airport can mean arriving at your hotel close to midnight. If you have a choice, an earlier flight into the far airport can be better than a late one into the near one.
  • Your last day. If you are flying out of the far airport, plan the drive with a buffer for traffic, check-in and security. We suggest a pickup time when you book.
  • Group arrivals. For weddings and group trips, guests often land at both airports. Collect everyone’s flight numbers and airports first, then plan vehicles by airport and time. See wedding transport.

Arriving late at night

Pre-booking matters most for late arrivals. Send your flight number when you book so the driver can follow the arrival time, and keep the driver’s number handy once you land. If your flight is delayed, you do not need to rebook: waiting terms are confirmed with your fare.

Mopa or Dabolim: a quick way to decide

Look up your hotel in the table above. If one airport is more than 30 minutes closer, choose it unless the flight times or fares are much worse. If the difference is small, as it is for Calangute, Baga, Candolim and Panjim, pick whichever flight suits you best and book the transfer from that airport.

Which vehicle to book for an airport transfer

Luggage matters as much as headcount. Tell us how many large suitcases you have and we will size the vehicle.
